Prelude to Fall Blau


Kromatorsk area, Russia, May 17, 1942: On May 12th the Soviets made their second 
attempt to recapture Kharkov. Missing their initial opportunity, they committed their
second echolon troops. Unforetunately for them, it was too late as the Germans counter-
attacked to the south.

For the Germans to win they must exit troops to meet with 6th Army to cut off the Russians
For the Russians to win they must stop the German offensive

Aftermath: The 9th Army was not prepared to throw back a German attack. The Germans 
threw the Soviets back with superior forces. On May 23rd, Army Group "Kleist" joined 
up with the 6th Army to cut the Soviets off from the east. The Kharkov offensive had 
failed.
